Writer

Maria Murphy is a writer for Allusion Magazine. Growing up in a small town in Upstate New York, Maria gravitated towards the few artistic spaces open to her, including regional theatre and film projects with friends. During the pandemic, Maria fell in love with comedic screenwriting through online classes taught by The Barrow Group and Second City. This love flourished due to Ms. Baker, an easygoing and empowering creative writing teacher. After graduating high school early, Maria spent a formative semester volunteering as a wildlife worker in Alejuela, Costa Rica and a cultural worker on Sado Island, Japan. Now a sophomore screenwriting major at Loyola Marymount University, Maria is following the television track and dreams of a spot in the writer’s room. In the meantime, she’s making sure LMU sets are fitted up, as she costume designs many each semester. Maria is currently President and Writing Director of LMU’s Her Campus Chapter, as well as a writer for Strike LA magazine. Maria’s passion for comedy is inspired by her favorite writers: Mindy Kaling (The Mindy Project), Andy Samberg (SNL’s The Lonely Island), Mekki Leeper (Jury Duty), Cole Escola, (The Other Two), Fred Armisen, Bill Hader, Seth Meyers, and Rhys Thomas (Documentary Now!), Mark Duplass (Creep, Safety Not Guaranteed), and Raphael Bob-Waksberg (BoJack Horseman). Maria is honored to be a member of Allusion Magazine. Being able to pick the brains of industry professionals and showcase new talent are her greatest joys as a staff writer. She cannot wait to watch this magazine grow as the film industry does!
